Places to stay: The Cliff Hotel, Gorleston

Decided we needed to take a little break, so booked in at the Cliff Hotel. We saw an offer on Groupon - one night stay including cream tea and breakfast, perfect! This hotel is found in Gorleston, a little sea side town just outside Great Yarmouth. As the name suggests the hotel is set up on the top of the cliff, with views over the sea.

First impressions are important and this hotel really delivered. We were greeted at reception by a very friendly young lady who immediately made a joke about us having issues with the entrance door, just to clarify, there's nothing wrong with the door. We just struggled with it for some reason. I'm cross that I didn't get the lady's name but she was very sweet and made us feel welcome, making jokes about her dramatic role in the murder mystery nights hosted there.

The hotel is currently being revamped, the corridors were being decorated; looked like they were replacing mattresses etc too. Our room looked like it had been newly decorated and was finished to a very high standard. The carpets were soft, it felt like they had just been laid. The headboard was grand and stylish. The bathroom was crisp and fresh, and super modern.

 

We had a really lovely time here. Our room was warm, cosy and comfortable. There were ample refreshments including some bottled still and sparkling water. Plenty of channels to choose from. We always have to visit the amusements, so that Olly can get his 2p machine fix.

Love visiting the coast in the winter. To be fair, at this time of the year it was like a ghost town, but there's something quite nice about being the only ones walking along the beach front.

Places to stay: The Big Sleep, Eastbourne

Arriving at the hotel, reception wet very friendly, efficient and accommodating. The decor in the rooms, was a little strange. It was minimalist which I like, but curtains were made of some sort of fleece material and everything was either blue or white. Apart from that I was quite impressed. Two spare pillows; an addition fleece throw on the bed; a full length mirror! The shower was boiling hot (amazing!). Most importantly it was clean, probably one of the cleanest rooms I've been in recently. The hotel had a pool and table tennis table, although I didn't take advantage of this. I loved the fact that you could bring takeaways into the main dinning area, not something you see very often. Continental breakfast in the morning, a good selection of cereals, cheese and pastries. However fruit and yogurts were lacking.

Places to visit: Cornwall

I always try to get down to beautiful Cornwall at least once a year.  This is the view from Watergate Bay, one of my favourite beaches situated just outside Newquay.   We like to surf and barbecue here.

We eat at The Beach Hut.  Its a very sweet little places, lots of character and charm.  We always make sure there is time to have a cream tea here.

This time we had breakfast at Jamie Oliver's fifteen, which also overlooks Watergate Bay.  Food was absolutely gorgeous, I could fault it.  They managed to turn a standard fry up, into something pretty spectacular to be honest.

One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the Minack Theatre near Penzance.  This is something really unique to Cornwall.   Its an open air theatre, carved into the side of the Cornish cliffs, with views across the sea.  Food and drink is available, however we prefer to take our own picnic.  We also take blankets to keep warm.  The visitors behind us had a great idea, they brought bottles of bubbly and gourmet treats. 

 

During the performance, the sun sets over the ocean.  Perfect!

Shows are normally on between April and September.  We watched Peter Pan performed by the students at Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London.  They did an amazing job.
